Pretzels!

The review: They’re not really pretzels.  They’re pretzel dinner rolls.  This was very appealing to me, actually.  They were a lot of work for the 8 knots we got out of them, but that recipe could have been tripled easily.  I think we could have polished off at least another 4, though, so…. serves 2.5.  :)

The process:

Let’s start with how much better equipped Paul is than I am.  The stand mixer is a must-have for baking.  Discovery: there are different kinds of flour!  If I had made this, it would have been all-purpose all the way (that’s why it’s called ALL-purpose, duh.)  But Paul actually had the called-for bread flour.  The mixing was dead easy with the bread mixer, and then we left it to rise (in the fridge) for an hour.

Rolling out the dough into knots, post first rise, pre second.  Intriguing.

Also, conspiracy alert: this recipe was constantly calling for us to spray non-stick spray on EVERYTHING.  I think the recipe was secretly sponsored by Pam.  Secret product placement: it’s not just for TV any more!

Poaching the newly-risen knots.  (See, I told you these would be a great Easter dish!  So full of symbolism.)  Next time, we would use a deeper pan.

Brushing on the oil and salt.  (No, we did not use the Morton’s in the background.)  I actually have a brush, and, of course, I have so much salt, so this step I could have done at my home as well.  :)

Look at that presentation.  If we have a food blog, I’m clearly going to have to step up my dish game.  And condiment game.  And cat game.

We ate two apiece.  There were none left.  That marks a success in my book.

Would I bake it again?  Yeah, at Paul’s house or if Mary brought her stand mixer over.  Good to make when you’re doing something else (like baking chocolate chip cookies and chowing on carnitas.)
