Blueberry bake-off

The blueberry boy bait was a snap to make, and served as my breakfast for a week.  But I wanted something even more blueberry-y, so I set off in search of the ultimate blueberry treat.

First, I made a blueberry cake.

It was awesome.  It has 2 cups of blueberries (twice as many blueberries as the boy bait!), and, with the addition of half a teaspoon of cinnamon to the batter, a very similar flavor in other respects.  This did not even last the week.

Flush with victory, I went looking for a buckle recipe.  This one was so good that Martha Stewart was pushing it, too.  I thought it was going to take the cake, as it were, just from the recipe.  It has 5 cups of berries!  It has a crumb topping!  This was going to be a slam dunk!

SO WRONG.  It’s fine, I guess, but it’s … well, it’s just not sweet enough!  Crumb toppings should either be sweet and crunchy, or buttery and salty, or… something.  This is mostly dry, with a little salt, a little sweet, a little meh.  The blueberry overload I was hoping for was there, but they just needed more sugar to bring out their flavor.  Very disappointing.

So, for now, the Simply Recipes blueberry cake is the reigning champion.  Have a favorite blueberry cake recipe I should try?
