Brunch at the Memphis Taproom
Brunch. It’s a great meal, and there are many, many great places to get it in Philly. Clearly, not enough places, since a half-hour wait seems standard these days….

Enter the Memphis Taproom. This Port Fishington gastropub is down the street from Greensgrow, so I’ve been hitting them up every few weeks. There is no wait for tables. We have never waited. This blew my mind.

Most of their brunch options are savory, which means you are going to get some eggs, some other stuff, and those tasty, tasty potatoes, which are uniformly hot, crisp, and well-cooked. (I cannot stand when brunch places foist their undercooked potatoes on you. Make extra potatoes! There is nothing worse than an underdone potato!) I’m particularly fond of their roasted mushroom egg in a basket, but I am a sucker for a good mushroom dish.

The sweet options are more limited — granola with yogurt or stuffed french toast. But you don’t need a host of options when the french toast is this good! Also, it’s vegan. Wha? I don’t know how they do it, folks, but it works. I normally love to slather my french toast with butter, and it didn’t even occur to me with this stuff. It is perfect all by itself, sitting in its pool of maple-black pepper “cream”.
I’m way more into br than unch, but there are burgers, salads, onion rings and more for people who think breakfast food should take a hike after 10am.
So, the next time the thought of waiting an hour to put food in your mouth is threatening your brunch plans, head to the Taproom. You’ll be patting your belly as you pat yourself on the back for your wise choice.
