Ocean City, Maryland
Paul, Nathan, my mom, and I packed up last week to go to Ocean City, Maryland. I know it’s not as common for Philadelphians to go to non-Jersey shores, but my father used to take us to OC, MD when I was a teenager, and my mom went just last year and loved it. Since my mother wanted to go with us this year, I planned our trip for MD rather than NJ.
I had wanted to take photos of the food we got at various restaurants so that when I blogged this all, I’d have the appropriate photos to sprinkle throughout the post, but life gets busy, and I mostly forgot. Sorry, dear readers.
Like all people visiting the shores of Maryland, my family and I decided when we got into town that we were going to eat crab, crab, and more crab. Our first there, we ate at Phillips Crab House. I had to have the crab bisque (good, but not great, and slightly spicy, as well), and upon hearing that I liked raw oysters, my mom ordered some. I was a little nervous after a not great oyster experience at Lacroix, especially considering that we were completely disregarding the “months that contain R” rule. We were lucky and they were delicious. They were so delicious that when we went to Phillips later in the same week, we got raw oysters again! For entrees, Paul got crab cakes, I got crab au gratin, and my mom got crab imperial. We could not decide who got the best item! I know Phillips is a chain restaurant, but I still recommend them. Fast service, good food, and fast seating even during peak hours can make me overlook a chain name.
During our second visit, much later in the week, Nathan flipped out and refused to do anything besides point desparately at my mom’s virgin strawberry daquiri which she had let him try. When we would not give him any, instead trying to get him to eat a real meal, he threw himself backwards into his high chair and cried wholeheartedly. I was forced to eat my meal standing while holding him in a comforting manner. My mom and Paul managed to eat two steamed crabs each, but they took eight to our condo. We figured that would be nice, and we grabbed a six pack of Yuengling to go with. Paul ate one more there, and I ate one myself. My mom finished the rest! Here’s the carnage.
She’d kill me if she knew that was on the internet, so be silent internet friends.
Also worth mentioning is our three trips to the Bayside Skillet.
They had very very tasty omelets and decent crepes. I can’t say their crepes were the best I ever had, because I’ve been to Paris and had street vendor crepes with coconut and nutella there that made me nearly cry with joy, but I can say that the Skillet’s crepes were good for American crepes. As a hint for those who go, one crepe and one omelet can fill up one man, two women, and one baby. You might not think that a baby can eat a lot, but then you might not know Nathan.
That? It’s the remnants of this crepes Kathryn, which had peaches, raspberries, and strawberries on top of crepes encasing more fruit and some ‘Chantilly’ cream. (Chantilly creme is simply heavily whipped cream with some vanilla and sugar. This is how I always make it so I should fancy up all my future desserts by noting the Chantilly cream.)
Can you tell that on my last trip to the Bayside Skillet I remembered that I food blog nowadays?
Also worth noting during our trip is that the Candy Kitchen had delicious fudge which we brought home for friends, family, and ourselves.
