Preview: SquareBurger at Franklin Square
Franklin Square, I love you. I love your mini-Philly mini-golf. I love your playground. I love your fountain, and carousel, and sand sculptures. (I don’t love your idiotic “no photos” policy. Get rid of that.) And I love that you realized that your concessions needed to go beyond soft pretzels and hot dogs.

Mary had heard that Steven Starr’s new SquareBurger (check out the menu on Meal Ticket) was opening today, so we headed over at lunch to check it out. It’s not quite open yet, but they were doing some preview samples, and we were lucky enough to get to try everything you might want — root beer floats, burgers, fries and a chocolate shake!
Most frequently compared to New York’s Shake Shack, it’s clearly cut from the same cloth. The burgers are right up my alley — not too big, soft bun, reasonably-ish priced (under $5 is the report.) Since these were freebies, I ended up with your standard “with everything” burger — ketchup, mustard, chopped onions, pickles, and cheese. It’s the grown-up version of the McDonald’s cheeseburger, with a substantially better patty. The fries were very good, salty and crispy, even though they weren’t fresh out of the fryer. (The Shake Shack has outstanding cheese fries, which I hope to see added to SquareBurger’s menu.) Mary was still a little hungry, but I was satisfied with the size of everything.
The root beer float was nice, with good quality ice cream. The shakes, though, I’m really looking forward to. Great flavor and consistency, and a little whipped cream on top. Fries and a milk shake are totally a valid lunch!
Post-shake, we were both happy as clams, and I’m looking forward to the full opening. In Franklin Square, SquareBurger is guaranteed to be a hit. I just hope they bring in some more tables and chairs!
