What’s your favorite recipe site?
Jenn and I have often discussed how there should be a ravelry for cooking. Ravelry, should you not have any knitters in your life, is a knitting “social networking” site, but it’s really a massive repository of information about all things knitting related. And where it’s really most relevant to the world of cooking is patterns.
Ravelry has a massive database of pattern information. Free patterns are available on the site, but information is available for paid patterns, too. You can see how many people have done a particular pattern, how hard they thought it was, pictures they took of it, any notes or comments they made about modifications, and more. You can also save patterns you might want to do, and keep a “bookshelf” of paid patterns you already own.
There is a recipe for everything online. And if someone says to you, “oh, there was a great recipe for cherry-rhubarb pie in Martha Stewart Living from June 2006”, you can probably google up that recipe in no time. But let’s say, for instance, you were tired of overpriced chicken mole burritos, and wanted to add that to your burrito repetoire, where would you go for information? Moles have lots of ingredients, and I will have to go buy some of them, so my standard criteria of “not too many ingredients” or “only things I have on hand” won’t work here. A lot of the big professional recipe sites only show you their recipes, and the ones where you can add your own recipes are of … inconsistent quality, let’s say. Plus, the ability to see what lots of people think of the same recipe, see their pictures, consider their mods… To queue recipes that sound good to you? Gosh, I might even discover some new cookbooks I wanted to buy! It sounds like a dream come true.
Maybe there’s some secret site out there. I doubt it. Where do you go when you’re looking for a new recipe?
