Capogiro loves me: sea salt gelato!

I was getting dinner today at a pizza/ice cream parlor, and, while I partook of the pizza, I passed on the ice cream, as I’m not really an ice cream person.  My friend said, “but you love capogiro so much!” And I said, “That’s not ice cream, that’s gelato.”

If you haven’t been to Capogiro before, you are missing out on one of the great Philadelphia food experiences.  Unless you are getting the gelato at one of the city’s other gelaterias for free, don’t bother; none of them hold a candle to Capogiro.

Here’s what’s good there: everything.  Ok, that’s not really true, but you can’t go far wrong there.  They are happy to let you sample (really; I think I maxed out at 5 one day when they had a truly spectacular selection.)  When they have a fruit flavor, it’s because the fruit was in season and very, very ripe.  Their flavors are uncanny.

They let you get more than one flavor.  Please, avail yourself of this option!  You can double, triple or quadruple your flavor experience, depending on the size you choose.  I like to get a fruit and a cream; Jenn gets two creams; bda likes a chocolate and a fruit; you can’t really go wrong.

Their cones are tasty, but I don’t get cones.  Cones don’t let you combine the flavors as easily as their spoons.

On to the sea salt gelato.  It was delicious.  Yes, I love salt.  But I love salt because it brings out the flavors in everything.  This evening, I had sea salt, baci (chocolate and hazelnuts, like Baci chocolate), and mango.  Sea salt has a sweet cream base, so it was sweet and salty on its own, and combined beautifully with the chocolate.  The mango was a little off that evening, but the salt is very nice with fruit, and I’d love to try it again with the orange cardamom, one of my favorite flavors.

Their site will give you the daily flavor list per location (not the same at all of them, so check before you set out if you have your heart set on something.)  Sample heartily, and return often!
