Eh: Kite and Key and Adobe Cafe
I realized the other day that I generally only post about places that I felt I would strongly recommend, or would avoid at all costs. There’s also the vast middle range of places that are just fine. The places you go to because they’re in the neighborhood, or they’re cheap, or is open late, or someone you know really likes it, and it’s not worth making a fuss to go somewhere else.
Kite and Key was on my list a few weeks back of places to try. It has a nice little patio off to the side, and is a lovely place to grab a drink if you’re in the neighborhood. But, their fries were blah, the burger was nondescript, and the sliders, which are $15 for a mini version of their crabcake sandwich, pulled pork and burger (all of which are less than $15 at full size and include fries) did not include fries (which I did not yet know were blah.)
Adobe Cafe (the one on Passyunk, not in Roxborough) had plentiful free chips and salsa, and a reasonably-sized vegetarian menu, but we ended up here because the wait at Cantina Los Caballitos was too long, and I bet you will, too. The food was undistinguished, but…. fine.
Prohibition Taproom will probably get its own post. But it might be getting bumped out of the Eh category because it’s in my neighborhood, and I’m just blind to it. Or because it has really good fries. I’m a sucker for a great fry. But I was overwhelmed by the deep-fried green beans, and the pulled pork sandwich was a little tangy for my taste. I’ll get back to you about this one.
