Revisiting YummySoup
Curses to Jennifer, for getting me to subscribe to a couple new food blogs.  What I have been doing when I see a recipe I like is just “Mark Unread” every time I look at it.  But today was a Day of Much Cooking, so I cracked open YummySoup for the first time since I downloaded it.  And then I thought, gosh, wouldn’t it be more sensible to import all the recipes I’ve been thinking about, rather...

Second pass at soup.
A few months ago, I made a pumpkin soup that was not well received.  Soup is a huge pain the butt, so that was that.  But Thursday, I made a roast chicken for bda’s parents, and there was a lot of meat left on it, and I had just seen a recipe for a baked potato soup, and I decided to take another crack at it. It took forever, probably because I stopped twice.  I made the stock and cauliflower...

The World's Simplest Carnitas
For your cooking pleasure, the world’s simplest carnitas recipe, courtesy of the Homesick Texan. 3 lbs pork butt 3 cups water 1 cup orange juice 2 teaspoons salt Cut the pork into 1 inch by 3 inch strips.  Put everything in the pot.  Bring it to a boil, then let it simmer for 2 hours.  Raise heat to medium-high for 45 minutes, stirring occasionally, until all the liquid evaporates, and only...

Comparative dining.
Tonight, we went to Distrito to celebrate Mary’s birthday, and we did a beautiful thing.  We ordered every dish in 3 sections — ceviches, moles and “traditionales” (enchiladas, tamales, queso and quesadillas.) Mary asked me the other day what my favorite restaurant in the city was, and I said Ansill.  All-time favorite cheese plate?  Clearly the one at Django back in the day.  Favorite brunch...

Wanted: cookbook app
My needs are simple.  I want something to store recipes, plan meals, and generate grocery lists.  It should be easy to share everything with someone else, and share particular recipes with the world in general (or even just via email would be nice.) It should NOT require many, many fields to function.  For lots of things, I’d just like to put a name in, to jog my memory that I know how to cook it...

10 minute (and 24 hour) dinner
How can it be possible that I have never marinated anything before?  bda was hankering for some burritos, so I got some flank steak.  I marinated it overnight using a dry rub, then threw it on the grill pan for 10 minutes.  Everything else was pre-purchased. Was it the world’s best burrito?  No.  Was it better than I expected?  Yes, indeed it was! And I have enough meat (and more than enough...

Should I rejoin the CSA?
Upsides: someone else thinks about some of the food I eat, and sends me recipes about it; fresh fruit; cool stuff like oysters; the cheese was pretty good; the eggs were GREAT, and I always finished them; supporting local farms = more goodness. Downsides: I have to go to the farm to pick them up, which always made me feel swamped (though I could switch it to Saturday mornings for this year); it’s...
